02/01/09 WICK MATCG POSTPONED AT KICK OFF
WEEKENDS FOOTBALL NEWS

From the onlookers point of view it all looked good for the match to go ahead at the Caburn this Saturday against visitors Wick in the first game of 2010 . The snow had gone and the rains had stopped, the sun had been shinning on most of the pitch for nearly two day's with the groundsman doing all he could, the whole picture looked good as the supporters started arriving, it all looked like we were at last going to get to watch a football match at the Caburn

That was until the Ref decided at 3:00 to call it off, why then and not when he arrived an 1hr 1/4 earlier only he knows, the weather conditions were not going to change the pitch in an hour! Instead we all stood round waiting for a decision either way. We all now no the outcome which many feel was the wrong decision, it seemed everybody, managers, players etc were willing to play it but it was not to be.

The Reserve how ever had a better day at the office, desperate for players after a few had drop out, the lads took to the pitch with four youth team players stepping up to fill the gaps, Kieran Patel being the only 1st team player to get a game (good call Kieran). It was also Manager Dave Millars first debut match in the hot seat. The Ringmer lads put on a good show for Dave and beat Seaford 2-1 with Ryan Betsworth converting a penalty and the second goal from Jordan

Dryer's goal puts the Blues through to the next round

The second successive cup game at home for the Blues this time the visitors were Peacehaven and the Brighton Charity Cup. Ringmer history this season playing third placed Peacehaven, has not been good, loosing three out of three games to them, knocking us out of the RUR Cup and both league matches. This made this win a bit sweeter for that fact.

Ringmer looked the better at the start with a goal coming from Kieran Patel after 18m, at half time it remained 1-0 to Ringmer. Disaster be-fell the Blues once again in the last five minutes of the game after a Peacehaven free kick led to a goal sending the match into extra time. A goal from Joe Dryer three minutes from the end of extra time sealed the win for the Blues in this hard fought tie.
Ringmer Manger Bob Munnery was pleased with the win and the teams performance after a bad run of games.
"As we've had a run of games where things haven't quite gone our way - in particular League games - and at times we've not shown the killer instinct in the last third of the game - it was satisfying to end a battle showing true grit and determination.

It was also good to see JD returning to the form he showed two terms ago. He wanted to come off at 90 minutes but with Jay needing to quit with a swollen ankle (which we worked on pre-match) and having only Lasty as our remaining sub he had little option other than to stay on. His goal making the final difference.

With Aaron Hasan our club captain returning and Pricey and Ryan Mac available for Saturday we see possible changes for the game versus Crawley Down. We could lose Jay with his ankle and JD with a dead leg but we'll have to see. I have to check with Eastbourne Town to see if we can continue to use Jon Marzetti.

I was intrigued to see that Crawley Down netted seven times against East Grinstead last night. We have a tough encounter before us on Saturday afternoon".

Mistakes by Ref cost Ringmer a win.
Nobody can say that the Blues did not try on Saturday and most would agree that they deserved the win. Indeed I suspect they would have done but for some poor decisions and blatant mistakes by the Referee. The Blues 2-1 up at the break and looking very positive, but by the end of the match all things were level at 4-4. This was after Ringmer goalkeeper Gary Trott was sent off supposedly for hand balling outside of the area, when I asked he said the ball hit his chest/shoulder in the fracas as he went down. From here the game was turned, Wick scoring twice in the last minutes of the match taking it too extra time, where they eventually emerged winners at 5-7.
For those who don't use the Nomad forum a quote by one of our players:
"We've had this ref before and he is an honest and good bloke. However he must realise that he had a shocker for us all game. Two blatant pens missed and a series of other mistakes. Same as players - sometimes we have poor games." "Wick are a good bunch of lads so no hard feelings against them. The turning point was when we were 4-2 up with 7 mins to go our keeper had a rush of blood to the head and came flying out of his goal to make a handball. He was sent off and Wick got it back to 4-4. We put Dave Soutar our defender in goal and from that point onwards it was really one way traffic and very dissapointing as we were so close to a good win. You could argue that their keeper should have been sent off in the first half too. Never mind, we played well and hopefully will have more luck next time"

Our manager had this to say
"You all know I dont moan about refs and I'm not going to say that this fella had a real bad game but someone else may well say something along those lines.”
“He made a mistake on the red card and I made one on the outfield player to replace the ousted keeper. He didn't mention my error so I thought it inappropriate to mention his.By contrast our number 8 put in a great performance - lets hope he keeps it going .... "
“Have no doubt, whilst we would want to win the cup game v Wick and the cup game v Peacehaven, we are completely focused on the next league match and three points.”

This is the third match thus far since the bad weather break and the third match I for one froze my proverbial nuts off! Southwick was warmed as we won, Selsey I didn't notice becausr the football was good, but last night I left frozen like the pitchthey played on.
We should have won going on last Saturday's evidence but alas it all went strangely breast's up! Joe's goal was a cracker and should have set the way but with a loss of momentum it seemed to go down hill from there on in.
I approached Bob tentatively to find out where it went wrong he answered:
“People say across the County League that we are far too good to be relegated but clearly our position indicates our true plight. Our players have got to realise that playing good football is not enough for us to survive on. Crowborough never gave up and we did. In the second half they wanted the win and threw everything at us and we didn't cope. I was really disappointed with our second half performance throughout the entire 11 players and particularly our midfield - their work rate being not high enough.”

“They call some games "must win games" and last night was one of them and we failed the test. We have players who aspire to a higher level when in fact they are not proven at this level yet. Throughout the side we have room for vast improvement. The desire to keep ourselves in front and win games is crucial to our survival and we have to have players playing with that desire and ambition.”

“We would now look to play a league game to right the wrongs but we now have two cup games. Perhaps we will be seeing players now with the correct winning attitude and show that they have the guts to get in there and fight for their survival.”

The trek down to Selsey won the Blues another draw and another point, the sixth draw in the last eight games. The Ringmer team played some great football with some of the best build up's and passing seen this season, this was commented on by more than one Selsey supporter in the bar afterwards.

A change of line up from Tuesday night win at Southwick with Elmo, Dave Altendorf and Ryan Mac out although Dave managed to make it for the reserves after a footballing commitment on Saturday morning.

All in all both sides seemed pretty even in the first half after the first fifteen minutes where Selsey had the edge as they pressured the visitors. Again in the second Selsey opened better but Ringmer tightened their formation and got down to business and equalled the home sides play after ten minutes.

I asked Bob's take on the game “We played a 4-5-1 formation which enabled us to get solid defensively and attack through the flanks as we got forward. I thought that a draw was a fair result - they had a few chances and so did we.”

Bob Said after the match “A point at Selsey is a point well earned. Gary Blocks side won team of the month in December and have not been beaten since he joined them. They are well organised and have Rob Wimble playing up top and he holds the title of the SCL highest goalscorer to date.”

At last game on, Tuesday night saw the first match for the 1st team since Dec 12th, since then the snows had frozen out any chance. Ringmer travelled down to ex Blue Player Dominic Shepherds Southwick for the firstround of the Brighton Charity Cup.
It would prove to be a big work out for all on the pitch after the long lay off and fitness would be a key factor, in the end with extra time both teams done remarkably well considering they played for a good 2 hours. Bob has had the lads training and playing indoor football at weekends as no pitches were available this has helped keep up their match fitness.

Play tactics from Ringmer gave them a slow start Bob Explained
"Both Steve and I agreed that we would start 4-4-2 in the Brighton CC game as we thought it likely that Southwick may have known a bit about our style of play." "In hindsight. that was an error; the players unable to adapt to the new system in 45 minutes. Steve had to leave at half - time but before he

left we agreed that 4-5-1 needed to the system second half,"

"So we swapped it around having seen us struggle and applied our usual style of play."

This did make a noticeable difference in the second half as Ringmer had a lot more of the ball. Three all at full time and this meant extra time to be played. Ringmer scored just four minutes in which was the deciding goal in the end as neither side scored again.

I asked Bob, was this to much for the first outing on the field?

"Some would say we could have done without 2 hours of football but before the Selsey game it was probably the best thing. It certainly replaced Thursdays training session." "A good win but the important game is on Saturday when we get back to the league fixtures."
